Mise en Scene (Stranger Things)

What decade is stranger things set in?

Stranger things is set in the late 1980's. Which is around the neon era, with all of the classic cars and buildings, with the style of their outfits this can become very believable. They make no mistakes and are always right with the props they use. The main group always travel around on bikes, which is common from the 1980s. The cars that they use are always of the era, and the stereotypical popular vehicles from the 80's. The popularity of arcades in the film also is reminiscent of the 80's with the Neo art style being very prominent.

The show is a horror/thriller genre, which is perfectly communicated by the tense dark feeling of the show, and the antagonists used are also very disturbing in their movement and appearance. The genre of the film is also fitting with the era that the show was set in, with the rise of horror style thriller films at the time. The show also uses highly saturated intense colours to convey the thriller/horror film.

Some of the mise en scene elements are used in stranger things to create a realistic and emotional presentation of stranger things. One example is when they are all trying to save max. The use blocking of the characters being close to each other to show how they are all very close to each other emotionally.

The actor placement in this scene shows how the characters have very good relationships with each other, and care for one another.

another example of the use of mise en scene is the location, the setting, being used to establish the theme of the film.

This is a good example of setting. the use of location and colour brings a very unsettling feeling, with the spiky trees and powerlines making the audience feel unsafe, which really fits in with the scene. This also highlights the theme of the film, being a thriller/horror film, and making sure the audience is aware of that. The placement in the scene is used to draw audience attention. The staging of the scene is used well to show how the monster in the sky has much more power than the people on the land.

This shot also shows emotional bonds. The blocking of the characters is showing how they are a group and that certain people in the group are closer than others. For example eleven and mike are very close to each other in this scene, signifying their relationship.

This screenshot is another good example, as the prop use and the blocking on stage show the character to be brave and strong, which is a perfect depiction of Hopper. The dim colour scheme supports the theme of the scene as the tension builds before he attempts to kill the monster behind the camera

This is a shot from James Bond No Time To Die, the proxemics in this scene are used to show his entire body, to highlight on his movement.
